Sustainable development from the perspective of the public sector
Klimeš, Zdeněk ; Hromádka, Vít (referee) ; Matějková, Jitka (advisor)
The thesis focuses on the evaluation of sustainable urban development. The theoretical part is processed as literature research, from which important indicators for the design of the methodology of sustainable development assessment of the city are derived. The research presents basic concepts related to the public sector, local government, sustainable development, and public investments. The core part of the thesis is the design a methodology to help local governments to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the city's sustainability. Additionally, it can serve as a basis for investment decision-making. This methodology is based on a multi-criteria analysis of selected key indicators that assess the functionality and sustainability of cities. The aim of this work is to offer cities a practical tool that will not only help with the assessment of the situation, but will also contribute to improving the sustainability of urban areas as centers and producers of significant economic, ecological, and social processes.
ZBROJOVKA FACTORY BRNO
Smejkalová, Veronika ; Kristiánová,, Katarína (referee) ; Havliš, Karel (advisor)
This diploma project deals with a post-industrial factory area Zbrojovka Brno. It proposes a strategy for its revitalisation and development. On contrary to official studies of one time reconstruction and creation of a residential site, the proposal brings an idea of step by step transformation into a multifunctional city quarter with preservation and new use of original industrial architecture. The strategy has four main phases, which are characterised by addition of functions, metamorphoses of public space and opening of the area and connecting it to neighbourhoods. After the four phases, the area should become a healthy and sustainable city with a compact structure with mixed functions, high quality public spaces linked with greenery, sustainable system of transportation and energetic concept and with use of community sharing.
The socio-ecological transformation of the former Prague slum "Pod Bohdalcem - Na Slatinách"
Barkász, Csilla-Zsuzsa ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Čada, Karel (referee)
The thesis is the result of qualitative field-research, based on semi-structured interviews and observations in the former Prague slums Pod Bohdalcem and Na Slatinách. The research reflects competing visions of various stakeholders with regards to the future development of these last almost fully preserved colonies, which were created for- and by the poor. The thesis also reconstructs and monitors the development of the conflict that arose between the inhabitants of the colonies and the urban planners in the course of the creation of the study "Bohdalec-Slatiny- Brownfield Strašnice", which proposes a new city-district in the area of the former colonies. It further captures the main reason for the dispute, namely the different perceptions of the colonies by its inhabitants and the institutions responsible for urban planning. For the first actor the area in question means 'home', as well as a place with rich history, while for the second it represents mainly a lucrative brownfield. The thesis also compares often incompatible visions of the stakeholders. It further describes signs or strategies of resistance that the inhabitants manifested from the beginnings of the colonies to the present day. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the concept of the right to the city and considers the...
Potential of garden and productive urban space in the today's city
Adamková, Jana
Green areas were an integral part of cities throughout the history. Productive garden, which represents an archetypal symbol of human livelihoods and connection between man and earth, has been disappearing from the urban structure in recent years. Urban agglomerations and their resource uses become the dominant feature of the human presence on the earth, profoundly changing humanity’s relationship to its host planet and its ecosystems. Cities require vast areas of land for their sustenance and have come to depend on large amounts of food being brought in from outside the land area they actually occupy. The article deals with the importance of gardens for humans and highlights the role of productive urban space in process of creating a viable urban environment. As the world urbanises, greater local food self-reliance, using nutrients accumulating in our cities, must be regarded as an important aspect of sustainable urban development. Along with other initiatives and activities, urban agriculture therefore has an important role to contribute to the sustainability of cities in various ways – spatially, socio-economically and environmentally.
